Limitless possibilities

As ̽’ golfers navigate the fairways and greens early each Saturday morning, they appreciate the silence that precedes each swing of the club.

In a season first, seven boys registered to compete in the 2023/24 Independent Schools Golf Tournament. Throughout the season, they demonstrated the enduring spirit of golf as epitomised by the legendary Arnold Palmer: “Success in golf depends less on strength of body, more on strength of mind and character.”

At the Summer Rally in mid-March, the Convenor of Golf, Mr Ralis Vane-Tempest, encapsulated the essence of Match Play golf – a one-on-one battle that is as much about psychological resilience as it is about athletic prowess.

“If you have ever played golf casually or competitively, anytime you set up for a golf shot, there is a real possibility, no matter your skill level, of a fantastic result. This happens every time without fail. Golf is a game of limitless possibilities with a dash, sometimes a large dose, of disappointment,” stated Mr Vane-Tempest.

Our golf line-up was as formidable as it was diverse including Blake M (Y8) with a handicap of 10; James N (Y9) boasting a handicap of 3; Patrick H (Y10) with a handicap of 20; George M (Y10) with a handicap of 8; Joshua MC (Y12) with a handicap of 16; William M (Y12) with a handicap of 6, and Oscar K (Y12) with a handicap of 10.

The competition was fierce, with the boys facing formidable opponents, particularly the exceptional golfers from Knox Grammar School, who were the season winners. Despite finishing towards the bottom of the table, the ̽ boys remained undaunted, their spirits never wavered and their dedication to the sport never diminished. They maintained a high standard set by some of ̽’ finest golfers in previous years with their competitive nature to always give their best each week.

“They have been excellent ambassadors of the College with respect to their sportsmanship and behaviour,” said Mr Vane-Tempest.

Some of the season’s highlights demonstrate the boys’ commitment, including Blake M, who emerged as a stalwart player, pushing his teammates to excel and never giving his opponents an easy pass. William M showcased an extraordinary improvement, slashing his handicap by 10 strokes and making an eagle that left onlookers at North Ryde in awe. His brother George M followed his lead, dropping 8 shots off his handicap, a testament to his competitive zeal.

Patrick H celebrated his first season win with exemplary putting skills, a vital aspect of golf, against a much stronger opponent at the prestigious Royal Sydney Golf Club. Joshua MC displayed remarkable consistency, with nearly all his matches concluding on the 18th hole, a clear sign of his competitive spirit. Win, lose or draw, Joshua kept going until the end, with no opponent ever getting 2 shots ahead.

Oscar K stepped onto the course every week with high standards and a self-critical eye. His standards and competitive nature ensured each shot, whether he had a 2 iron or a putter in his hand, was meticulously executed. And James N remained the epitome of consistency, demonstrating the ̽ spirit by never relenting in his pursuit of victory, match after match.

In golf, as in life, it is the journey with all its trials and triumphs that reveals the essence of the game. The invaluable experiences and growth encountered by each boy are emblematic of the true victory this year.
