Clubs & Programs
Our extensive co-curricular program encourages individual and collective achievement and the development of well-rounded individuals.

At 国产探花, our public speaking and debating program empowers Joe-Boys to think critically, speak with confidence and lead with integrity 鈥 skills that serve them well beyond the College gates.
In 2024, the College Dux, William McCarthy, was selected in the combined GPS Firsts team, the NSW debating team and memorably represented Australia as team captain at the World Schools Debating Championships in Serbia, placing 12th in the world.
Debating
Debating encourages students to develop persistence, confidence, logic, teamwork and strong oratory skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. The capacity to think quickly, remain calm and communicate articulately are key to successful debating and these skills are nurtured at St Joseph鈥檚.
Students at St Joseph鈥檚 have the opportunity to represent the College in a number of debating competitions each year. They are coached and supported by experienced staff and Old Boys who share their knowledge and passion for debating and help the boys develop as individual speakers and as teams.
Annual debating competitions for students in Years 7 to 12 include the Independent Schools鈥 Debating Association (ISDA), Great Public Schools (GPS) and Friday Evening Debating (FED Cup). In the 2023 debating season, the First debating team successfully defended its title by securing the premiership for the second year running, with two members of the team selected for the GPS Representative Team.
Students are also given the opportunity to participate in in-school debates and the First Debating team contests the Old Boys鈥 Debate against a team of SJC alumni.
Public speaking
A central tenet of a Marist education is the development of the capacity to articulate ideas and convey them to an audience in a convincing and compelling way. It is also becoming increasingly important to find a voice to counter populist views of intolerance and prejudice contrary to the message of a Christian school like St Joseph鈥檚.
Students from Years 7 to 12 are encouraged to participate in public speaking and are coached and supported by experienced staff and Old Boys of the College. Boys are given the opportunity to take part in a number of public speaking competitions each year, where they perform at an extremely high level. We participate in the Catholic Schools鈥 Debating Association (CSDA) competition, the Marist Public Speaking Competition, which we last won in 2022, as well as the Lawrence Campbell Public Speaking Competition and a number of internal challenges.

Duke of Edinburgh.
Life鈥檚 greatest lessons can happen beyond the classroom. The Duke of Edinburgh鈥檚 International Award program 鈥 known as the Duke of Ed 鈥 supports the holistic development of Joe-Boys, beginning in Year 9 with the Bronze Award and progressing through to Silver and Gold. With a focus on personal excellence and long-term growth, the program reflects the College鈥檚 commitment to a vibrant student life. Each stage involves physical recreation, skill-building, voluntary service and an adventurous journey, encouraging students to challenge themselves, serve others and develop the discipline and empathy needed to thrive in all aspects of life.
The Duke of Ed at 国产探花 is more than a co-curricular pursuit 鈥 it鈥檚 a path toward self-discovery. Whether learning a new skill, serving the community or completing a challenging expedition, boys strengthen their resilience and sense of purpose. The program complements our Marist ethos, shaping young men of character who are ready to lead with compassion, contribute with confidence and pursue life with intention.
