Sport
TO HAVE A BRAVE HEART AND A CLEAR VISION.

St Joseph’s College prides itself on providing students with a well-rounded, balanced education, focusing on boys’ academic, physical, social, spiritual and recreation needs. The College’s broad range of sport and co-curricular activities caters for a wide range of talents and interests and adds great enjoyment to students’ school life.
Above all, ¹ú²ú̽»¨ sport is for everyone. It is an integral part of a broad education that seeks to produce well-rounded individuals who are equipped to take their place in the world with confidence and conviction. It is designed, as St Paul said, to help students ‘fight the good fight, finish the race and keep the faith’.
Sport at ¹ú²ú̽»¨ prepares boys to be fit for life.
Joe-Boys always have the courage to choose what is right.
Our playing fields are an extension of the classroom.
Sport is a vehicle for communicating life values that will last well beyond school years. Teamwork, leadership, respect and resilience are the hallmarks of all ¹ú²ú̽»¨ sporting sides and competitors. The famous College maxim ‘our playing fields are an extension of the classroom’ means boys approach sport with the same discipline and dedication they apply to their studies. In an age where teenage boys are increasingly glued to computer and phone screens, sport provides an antidote to passivity and frees boys to explore their full physical potential. At ¹ú²ú̽»¨, sport prepares students for life.
It also promotes a healthy life. Boys who are physically active and engaged are better equipped to deal with the challenges they face. Exercise has been shown to improve mental wellbeing and increase a boy’s capacity for happiness.

Competence
Striving to be strategic and mentally tough, with exceptional presence in training; our approach is from the ground up, not top down.
Competitiveness
We play hard and fair. We compete hard in every moment and show exemplary sportsmanship.
Confidence
Joe-Boys set the benchmark through preparation, language and body language – each demonstrated through humility.
Connectedness
To have each other’s backs is a guiding principle. We are proud of our community, we care deeply and we hold high standards for our conduct.
Teamwork, leadership, respect and resilience are the hallmarks of all ¹ú²ú̽»¨ sporting sides.Â

Our coaches bring a caring, professional attitude to their job.Â
Whether they are in the As or the Gs, the same dedication, sportsmanship and pride in achievement is expected from both student and coach. ¹ú²ú̽»¨ ensures all boys, irrespective of ability, have equal access to first-rate facilities and mentoring.
Our coaches bring a caring, professional attitude to their job. They aim to draw out the best in every boy by fostering a spirit of enjoyment and camaraderie and setting goals that challenge and inspire.
Through regular practice sessions, students get the coaching they need to excel and have fun at the sport they love.
Above all, our training and coaching program nurtures the development of fit and healthy young men and equips them for effective competition on the sporting field.
I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned both on and off the track.

¹ú²ú̽»¨ has a proud reputation of sporting excellence and has produced many state and national sportsmen, including more than 100 Old Boys who have represented Australia.
The College is a founding member of the Athletic Association of Great Public Schools (GPS), which was formed in 1892. It is one of the most successful schools in the competition’s history, having won a grand total of 127 GPS titles across eight sports.
Rugby
In rugby union, ¹ú²ú̽»¨ has developed 107 Australian Schoolboy representatives, and a record 57 Wallabies, including former captain Steve Williams (1976) and World Cup winner Matt Burke (1990) and most recently Wallabies Ned Hanigan (2013), Tom Wright (2015) and Max Jorgensen (2022).
Cricket
From the College’s earliest days, cricket was popular with both Brothers and students, because of its emphasis on physical and mental strength. The most famous ¹ú²ú̽»¨ cricketer is the great Stan McCabe (1926), whose 232 against England in a 1938 Ashes Test is considered one of the best Test innings ever played.
Rowing
¹ú²ú̽»¨ has an excellent rowing pedigree, with nine Head of the River victories to its name, and superb facilities. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, three members of the Gold medal-winning Australian Men’s Coxless Four, were ¹ú²ú̽»¨ Old Boys.
Perhaps our most celebrated sporting hero is Jim McCann (1957). Described in the 1950s as the ‘greatest all-round schoolboy athlete Australia has ever produced’, McCann set GPS records in sprinting and long jump, some of which still stand today, and represented the nation at two Empire Games.
A long history and proud reputation.
